Episode 86: Get Back an Hour in Every Day with the “The Time Lord” Les Watson – Transcript
Rennie Gabriel 00:09
Hi, folks, welcome to Episode 86 of the Wealth On Any Income Podcast. This is where we talk about money tips, techniques, attitudes, information, and provide inspiration around your business and money. I'm your host, Rennie Gabriel. In past episodes, we spoke about how to understand the numbers from your business, how to measure the level of pleasure based on where you spend your money, how to track your money in 5 - 10 seconds, and what determines how close you are to Complete Financial Choice® is your balance sheet and what you're looking at. And how to run your business without being in your business. And if it only takes 5 - 10 seconds to track your money, maybe we should talk about time management. And today we have as our guest, Les Watson. Before I talk about Les, I want to let you know that last week we had Liam Austin, who spoke about virtual summits, and how to use workshops to create instant clients. Now let's get back to Les. He's got a passion for, and expertise in time management and productivity, which has earned him the nickname, "The Time Lord". He was early for our call so you know he's got it organized. He's based in Australia, and has worked extensively there and throughout Southeast Asia, delivering dynamic training programs to major corporations, small businesses, and individuals. His knowledge and skill comes from over 30 years of experience as a trainer, speaker, and facilitator in self-management, motivation, and communication. Les, welcome to the Wealth On Any Income Podcast.
Les Watson 01:57
Thanks, Rennie. It's awesome to be here.
Rennie Gabriel 01:59
Terrific. Well, let's get right to it with some questions. Well, I've got a good idea of what you do. Obviously, it has to do with time management. But why do you do it?
Les Watson 02:10
Such a great question. Why do I do it? Because if you're breathing, you need time management. People have this thing around time. 'I don't have enough time'. 'I can't get what I want done'. And all of your listeners are wanting to create something more in their life and you need to interact with time to do that. So given more time, you can get more done, you can head towards what it is you want to create. So my passion is helping people get an understanding of what stops them from, or what gets in the road of, and those sorts of things around time. What are the blockers? What are the things that get in the road? What are the things that hinder you from creating what it is you want around time? So for example, what are we like at procrastination. And a lot of people go, Ah, yes, the great P word, procrastination. I'm a big procrastinator. And that's just one of the things - I've got a book, Get Back An Hour In Every Day, that's available on the website, but that's beside the point - that people go to and they can pick it up as a coffee table book and look at it every page and go, 'Yeah, that one on procrastination, or that one on boundaries, or that one on getting up early, or that one about getting enough sleep.' So what is it for you, the listener, or you, Rennie, in regards to what is your relationship with time? Is it good? Are you the sort of person that says, 'I'm always late, I'm always late, I'm always late, I'm always late', and therefore you're always late. Are you the sort of person that's on time for everything?
Rennie Gabriel 03:57
Well, and I'm the person who is scheduled to be on time for everything except the things I don't care about, and then I'll be late. So if it's important, I'll be on time. If I don't care, I'll be late, because I let other things have a priority. So that's my relationship with time. Let me ask you about your relationship with philanthropy because I donate 100% of the profits from my working with people, my products, my books, my programs, I donate 100% of those profits to charity. So I want the people on my show to have some sort of cause or charity that's important to them. So tell me what yours is.
Les Watson 04:41
Kardinia Church - that's my local church here in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, and they do good work, not only locally, but also internationally. So for me, it's about giving where giving is needed, and it's about church for me. So they say from a Christian perspective, 'who's going to go if you don't send them?' And if I'm not the one that's going to be sent, then there are people that need to be sent. Therefore, I'm going to give into that so that they can do good work. And we do local stuff - and we do international stuff. So it's not just a matter of having to do something myself, I can give into that so that people can go out and do the things that I can't. So give Kardinia Church and the work that they do.
Rennie Gabriel 05:32
Perfect. Okay, well, I'm going to have that in the show notes. And also, I understand where you're coming from, in terms of, I don't sit down and train dogs to be service animals for soldiers who've got PTSD or traumatic brain injuries. But I donate a whole lot of money to the organization that trains those dogs.
Les Watson 05:51
Yeah. Yeah.
Rennie Gabriel 05:52
So tell me who your target market is, or are - target markets. Tell me.
Les Watson 06:00
Okay, so if I wanted to be silly, I'd go everybody, because everybody aligns a lot with time. However . . .
Rennie Gabriel 06:08
Oh, yeah. The man who if they can fog a mirror, that's not enough.
Les Watson 06:14
Are they breathing? Well, for me, it's small business. So if you're listening and you're in small business, then you are the person I need to be speaking with, because so many small business operators have this issue of, I've got too much to do, and not enough time to do it in it. And I can help. I wrote the book, Get Back An Hour In Every Day, because what would you do with an extra hour? So my target market is, in an essence, small business. And then on the other side, that's my coaching side, and on the other side, for corporate, I do corporate training in time management and leadership. So there are kind of two avatars or two target markets in that regard. But if you're a small business owner, that's the the one that's coming to the fore because of the pain that small business find around time, and not having enough time to do what they want to do.
Rennie Gabriel 07:04
Great. Thank you, Les. Well, now let me ask you, what would you say was your biggest failure whether it was personal or business?
Les Watson 07:14
I kind of hate this question because you bring out all your dirty laundry.
Rennie Gabriel 07:21
But yeah, it's a part of the show. You got it.
Les Watson 07:23
Yeah. A good friend of mine, Russell Brunson actually said that, someone in his circle said, 'I don't work with anybody who hasn't cycled once.' In other words, have you gone bust? And I didn't go bust-bust. I didn't go bankrupt. But I got to the point where our tax department said you need to close your business. In other words, we're going to come at you and I went, Okay. And I rode it into the ground because I didn't have the structures in place. And one of those structures, and I'll give this for anybody, and that is have some support around you. Get good people around you. Like Rennie, listen to good stuff. Have people that you can bounce ideas off, whether that's a Chamber of Commerce, whether it's mentoring, whether it's coaching. But I was trying to do it on my own, and it was the biggest mistake. And if I could go back, I would gather people around me. I'd get a mentor. I'd get a coach right at the beginning and go, 'How do I do this thing called small business?' And I wouldn't have had to actually close that business down. Did I learn a lot? Yes. Would I do it again? No. But I'm glad I'm able to take those lessons and go forward and teach others not to do the same thing.
Rennie Gabriel 08:08
Oh, I agree so completely. The insight about not trying to do business alone, I learned the hard way. And when I look back over the various businesses I've been in, the successful ones, I had partners, and the mediocre or failures, I was in it by myself. And the last one that's created the net worth, so I don't have to work anymore, again, was with partners, and I've come up with the expression, wealth creation is a team sport, not a solo sport.
Les Watson 09:04
Nice. Very good, Rennie. Very good.
Rennie Gabriel 09:06
So, you say, what would you say are the typical feelings, your prospects, experience?
Les Watson 09:16
Prospects, as in those that don't know me - are going through angst. They're going through anxiety. They're going through procrastination. They're going through troubles in their small business. They're feeling weighed down. They're feeling like they don't have that time, but the feeling inside is one of frustration and anxiety. 'I've got way too much to do and not enough time to do it in' or, 'why is it that I can't get done what I want to get done?' And I do a really simple thing of getting it out of your head down onto paper and I'll take you through a couple lists. And I'm happy to share that with you. In fact, you can put this in the show notes. It's, www.getmoretime.com.au - make sure you put the AU on there - /podcast. There's a couple of freebies on there. So one of them is you can have 15 minutes with me, just for free. Again, it's my giving heart . . . it's like, Why would you give something away? Because I want to get small business owners to go the next level. And if I can help in some way, happy to do that. So we can line up at Calendly, and we can work out a time that suits you in a time that suits me. But there's a couple of things on there. So you can take all of them, you can take one of them, but get in touch and I can help.
Rennie Gabriel 10:35
Terrific. Yeah, and I absolutely have that URL. It will be in the show notes. And you know, when people are suffering from overwhelm, they can't make decisions. They're just easily distracted. And it just, it doesn't work. I know I've been there.
Les Watson 10:50
Yeah, people are wanting to create Wealth On Any Income. It's like, and you're stuck in the quagmire. You're stuck in the day-to-day. It's like, how do you come out of that and work on your business rather than in your business? And you need time to do that. I can help in that regard.
Rennie Gabriel 11:06
That's terrific. Thank you. And I'll be sure to . . . that will be in the shownotes. No question about it. And is there a question that I should have asked you, that would also give some great value to those who are listening?
Les Watson 11:22
I love this question. I think it's about if there were two things that you were to focus everything onto in time management or small business, what would it be? And those two things are leadership and discipline. Because the only person that leads your life is you. You can't be looking for someone else to lead your life. It's got to be you. And then on the back end of that, as you start to make decisions, have the discipline to back it up, day in, day out. Day in, day out, week in week out, month in month out. Have the discipline to do what's required over time. So that . . . How does a person get to the Olympics? They do things day in, day out, week in week out, month in month out, year in year out, and end up doing what is required to get the prize. So if you want to do, if you want to make change, then some of that's going to require discipline. And those two things, leadership and discipline, really help a small business owner get to the next level.
Rennie Gabriel 12:28
Terrific. And that makes so much sense because it's the same thing . . . there was a wonderful book called, Change Anything, that spoke about willpower is the weakest tool to use when you want to change any behavior.
Les Watson 12:45
Very good, very good.
Rennie Gabriel 12:46
And you're talking about discipline, and a lot of that can come from having someone else supporting you. So when you talk about leadership, I'm not talking, I'm not sure if you're talking about being led by someone or being a leader.
Les Watson 12:59
By being a leader. Everyone wants to be a leader, even if it's just leading the dog. Everybody wants to be a leader. So how do I lead my life? How can I be the leader rather than just being led by somebody or led by circumstance? How do I take control? How do I make stuff happen? Or words to that effect? How do I get the goals that I want done in life? How do I attain them? I need to lead and I need to be the leader. I need to make change and I can help in that regard.
Rennie Gabriel 13:30

Les Watson 13:41
You're welcome. It's been a pleasure, Rennie. And again, I am available. If people want to get in contact, I am happy to help. And there are those that go, 'You're great and I want to be coached by you.' And we can have a discussion about that, but that's not an issue. Rennie Gabriel 14:00
